The Power of Self-Care.

I am sure you have heard the phrase “self-care” at some point in time, but what exactly is self-care, and why does it matter to you?

Self-care is the space you create for yourself on this Earth. It is the balance of physical, mental, emotional, social, and spiritual well-being. Self-care is how you protect your energy.

What constitutes self-care?

Maybe it has been awhile since you have seen a close friend so you set a coffee date for the weekend. This would be an example of practicing social self-care. Maybe you only have one hour to visit and then you have to go to a yoga class you have been wanting to try for awhile. Setting this time boundary around your coffee date is another example of self-care. The yoga class is a practice of physical self-care.

Mental self-care orients around activities that keep you mentally stimulated. Setting aside time to read a new book or learning a new skill are both forms of mental self-care. Emotional self-care is connected to, you guessed it, your emotions. Do you process your emotions in a healthy way? Practicing mindfulness is a way to foster your emotional self-care. Implementing a mindfulness practice helps you develop the ability to respond in situations versus react (more on reacting vs. responding in next weeks blog post).

Spiritual self-care is about finding meaning and connection to something greater than yourself. Maybe you feel connected to the Earth after you have reached the summit of a hike. This activity would encompass physical, spiritual, and mental self-care.
